Kylie Jenner has released yet another lipkit and it’s not something we saw coming. Instead of sultry reds or beautiful mauves, we were treated to edgy matte black called Dead Of Knight. Of course the lipkits sell out instantly and if you don’t live in the US, say hello to custom charges and pricey shipping. If you look on eBay there are hundreds of fakes out there from China which can contain really harmful chemicals; definitely something to avoid. So what is a girl to do when she can’t get hold of King Kylie’s newest kit? Affordable, drugstore branded black lipstick are really hard to come by let alone a matte, liquid version. So when I came across the MUA Luxe Velvet Lip Lacquer in Potent my heart literally stopped. Oh and did I mention it’s £3?
The formula is a comfortable velvet-matte which dries so quickly. The pigmentation means after one coat it’s a more of a matte grey and I would recommend a couple of coats for the matte jet black effect. I wore the product all day and like all MUA Velvet Lip Lacquers, it does not budge unless you eat really oily food or drink a lot of hot coffee. Out of all shades I think black is really noticeable when it starts wearing away as it obviously contrasts the most with your natural lip colour. So to have a £3 product that will stay with you all day with minimal touch up is absolutely amazing.
Obviously Kylie lipkits also come with a lip liner and I had a bit of a hunt for a black drugstore liner. I could not find one anywhere! I could find deep, dark plums, reds and even chocolate brown but after scanning so many websites I could not find a black. I admit that I have relatively small lips but I don’t tend to over line them, I’ll use the wand of the liquid lipstick to gently line my lips. So for me, not having a liner is not the end of the world. But with something as striking as black, you might want to find one for a clean edge around your lips as touching up with concealer will only go so far.
I’m not 100% sure of the colour on me, it seems a bit too striking and strong. I’d definitely have to get used to wearing it all the time which is another reason why I love this product so much. If it doesn’t work for you, you have only invested £3. Quite a difference from the $29 price tag of Kylie’s kit along with international shipping and customs fees.
Of course for some people buying the official, real thing is what they want to do and that’s 100% ok. But if you’re on the fence over the colour, not sure about the price and hassle of shipping or even if you can’t get hold of one on a restock – MUA Potent might be for you.
